What is the most productive way to build income with per diem in mind?

Stand-up overnights are probably the most productive. You get the per diem deduction for a two-day trip but are only gone for a short period of time. These may also be referred to as "high-speed overnights."

Anything but day-trips will add to the per diem deduction if you itemize. Financially speaking, day-trips are a bad-deal for pilots and flight attendants. Not only do pilots incur non-deductible vehicle expenses such as fuel and auto maintenance every day they work a day-trip, but they also get no money back from the per diem deduction for those days. On day-trips, the per diem paid to crewmembers should be taxable per diem and included as gross income on Box 1 of the W-2.

International trips are the most lucrative. Some flight crewmembers who fly almost all international trips are having M&IE expenses in excess of $18,000. This is normal for them because OCONUS per diem rates tend to be higher than CONUS per diem rates.
