What if the hotel we stay in is in a different city than the airport?

Because different crews stay in different hotels, it is impossible to use hotels as the reference point to determine the appropriate CONUS or OCONUS per diem rates. For this reason we base per diem calculation strictly on the locations of the airports. The IRS wants consistency, and in the event of an audit, it is important to show that you consistently applied the same method for the entire year. You cannot use the airport locations sometimes and the hotels at others simply because it gives you a higher deduction.
